Product Information for
Cartridge Rolls

A cartridge roll is a strip of abrasive cloth wound and bound with glue around a mandrel to form a cylinder. It is generally specified either as "straight", "tapered" or "half-tapered" (a.k.a sidewall tapered), referring to the form the strip of abrasive cloth takes from being rolled.

Cartridge rolls are principally but not exclusively used for high-speed deburring and finishing of cast metal parts. They provide an extremely economical finishing solution to a wide variety of applications, whether on inside or outside diameters, difficult angles and irregular contours. As a cartridge roll is used, the outer layer breaks down, repeatedly uncovering fresh layers of abrasive cloth.

Cartridge rolls are most frequently ordered in X-weight aluminum oxide resin bond cloth. They are also fairly common in J-weight aluminum oxide resin bond and gluebond cloth (especially for jewelry applications) for fine polishing. They are also available, but rarely found in silicon carbide, zirconia alumina. Other minimally abrasive cloth or paper materials may be rolled into cartridge roll form to creatively produce a desired finish.

Because of the requirement for each successive layer of the material to break down, only light duty cotton backed materials are generally used to make cartridge rolls.

Measurement Specifications

Straight and full-tapered cartridge rolls are specified with three measurements. They are:

1) the outer diameter
2) the length
3) the pilot hole diamter

The diameter of straight cartridge rolls are measured at the top unless specified for base diameter. The diameter of full-tapered cartridge rolls refers to its widest or base diameter. In a half or partially tapered cartridge roll (also called sidewall tapered cartridge rolls) the length of the sidewall must also be specified.

Size & Grit Compatibility Issues

Due to the thickness and inflexibility of the material in coarser grits, some small diameter cartridge rolls cannot be made in coarser grits. Grit availability for straight and tapered cartridge rolls based on flexibility issues are as follows:

  Diameter: 3/16"
    Grit Range: 80 & Finer

  Diameters: 1/4" to 5/16"
    Grit Range: 60 & Finer

  Diameters: 3/8"
    Grit Range: 40 & Finer

  Diameters: 1/2" & Larger
    Grit Range: Any Grit

When making a full-tapered cartridge roll, small diameters (under 3/8") are never specified. Even straight cartridge rolls have some tapering at the end, due to the bias cut at the end of the strip. For cartridge rolls under 3/8" in diameter, there is no value in specifying a full taper, as any small diameter roll will, by the shortness of the strip and the bias at the end, be tapered.

Another limitation on full tapered cartridge rolls occurs when an especially fine grit is combined with a very large diameter. It requires a very long, unwieldy bias cut which is beyond the range of normal cutting equipment. Grit availability per diameter for tapered cartridge rolls is as follows:

  Diameter: 3/8"
    Grit Range: 40 & Finer

  Diameters: 1/2" to 3/4"
    Grit Range: 36 to 400

  Diameter: 1"
    Grit Range: 36 to 180*

  Diameters: Larger than 1"
    Grit Range: 36 to 40*

*Finer grits may be available on request depending on exact length of strip required.
